when a straight woman uses the term “girlfriend” to describe her platonic friend, rendering you momentarily surprised and delighted, then bummed when you realize that, yes, you are still alone in a crowd of straight people. 

especially when they know you’re queer or whatever 

especially when you’ve just had that conversation

especially when it’s your mother

I inflate a little every time I hear someone say that and then deflate twice as quickly.
